Head Out Tani's Travel Tales

Majuli is the largest inhabited river island in the world. This small village in the state of Assam is surrounded by Brahmaputra from all sides. Being in Majuli one could time travel to what India used to be 100 years back.

Majuli is only place to follow the Satriya culture where people have mastered the art of making exquisite bamboo masks to beautifully depict the Indian mythology. It is also home to mising tribe who follow donyi polo (God of sun and moon) religion (Also followed by some of the tribes in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh).

Mising people live a simplistic life and build bamboo homes (like the one in picture). The centre part of the hut is where the hearth exists. They earn their living through farming (mainly rice) and fishing. Village has numerous ponds and one could see grown ups and kids fishing using just a wooden stick (really no fancy equipments and they are very good at it).

Apart from their beautiful handwoven clothes, pottery without the pottery wheel, bamboo artefacts, Satriya culture and amazing hospitality; this is also place to the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets!
