Maa Mahagauri is the eighth form of Goddess Durga, worshipped on the eighth day (Ashtami) of Navratri. Her name means:
“Maha” = great
“Gauri” = white or fair
So, Mahagauri means “extremely fair or radiant”.
🔱 Summary of Maa Mahagauri:
Appearance: Maa Mahagauri has a radiant, pure white complexion. She rides a white bull (named Nandi), wears white clothes, and has four hands — holding a trident (Trishul) and damaru (small drum), while the other two are in Abhaya (protection) and Varada (blessing) mudras.
Symbolism: She symbolizes purity, peace, wisdom, and austerity. Worshipping her is said to purify the soul and remove all past sins and karmic burdens.
Origin Story:
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati underwent severe penance to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband. Due to her long and intense tapasya, her body became dark and rough.
Pleased by her devotion, Shiva purified her with the holy Ganga, and she regained her original form — radiant, white, and beautiful — and was named Mahagauri.
Significance in Navratri:
On the eighth day of Navratri, devotees worship Mahagauri to gain inner peace, spiritual growth, and relief from suffering.
She is believed to fulfill all desires and help devotees attain moksha (liberation).
