India's Groundwater Crisis Alert! 🚨
Overexploitation of groundwater for water-intensive crops is leading to an impending water crisis, especially in states like Punjab and Haryana. A recent report by WELL Labs reveals that 70-80% of irrigating farmers in India depend on groundwater. The situation is dire, with over 87% of assessed blocks in Punjab having overexploited or critical water tables. India, with 18% of the world's population but only 4% of water resources, faces a severe challenge.
Climate change threatens to worsen the crisis, projecting increased groundwater depletion in the country's southwest. Globally, groundwater irrigation, covering over half of India's irrigated area, poses a similar risk. To address this, the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture promotes water-use efficiency through schemes like "Per Drop More Crop," emphasizing micro-irrigation technologies.
A sustainable shift to less water-intensive crops is crucial. Alternatives like jowar, millet, pulses, and vanilla use less water and must be promoted. Let's raise awareness and work towards sustainable water practices!
Easier said than done. How can we collectively shift to sustainable practices and ensure water for future generations? 💭💦

Pune's Groundwater Levels Decline! 📉
In a recent survey by the Ground Water Survey and Development System, Pune district has witnessed an average drop of 0.52 to 4.98 feet in groundwater levels. Purandar taluka recorded the most significant decline at 4.29 feet. The survey, covering 192 wells and 71 borewells, highlights the pressing issue of depleting groundwater levels. With the monsoons showing a shortfall and increasing urbanization leading to more groundwater extraction, there's an urgent need for sustainable water management practices. Let's raise awareness and work towards replenishing Pune's groundwater! 💦🔄
