Electricity is not just a cost in vertical farming. It defines profitability.
However, a common mistake we see across projects is this:
Teams try to reduce electricity by lowering light intensity or reducing operating hours.
The result? Lower yield, not real savings.
The real question is not:
“How to use less electricity?”
But rather:
“How to get more output per unit of electricity?”
Here is how we approach it:
1. Efficiency of Light (PPE)
Not all lighting systems convert electricity into usable photons efficiently.
Higher PPE (μmol/J) means more light output for the same power input.
Upgrading to high-efficacy LEDs can reduce energy consumption by 30–40% at the same PPFD.
2. Spectrum Optimization
Plants do not utilize all wavelengths equally.
By adjusting the Red:Blue ratio, we can influence plant morphology and improve productivity per watt.
Targeted spectrum leads to better results without increasing energy input.
3. Managing Daily Light Integral (DLI)
Many systems provide more light than the crop actually requires.
Once the plant reaches its light saturation point, additional light does not translate into growth.
It only adds to the electricity bill.
4. Thermal Load Management
Heat generated by lighting increases the cooling requirement.
Efficient fixtures with better thermal management reduce heat load, indirectly lowering HVAC energy consumption.
5. Peak Load Optimization
Electricity tariffs vary across the day.
Shifting the photoperiod to off-peak hours can significantly reduce the cost per unit of electricity.
The shift is simple:
From reducing electricity usage to optimizing energy efficiency.
For those working on vertical farming economics, this approach can significantly improve overall ROI.

Lighting the Future of Tissue Culture
For the last 9 years, Nexsel has been working closely with tissue culture labs across crops like Banana, Gerbera, Bamboo, Orchids, Citrus and more.
What we have learned:
• Tested 50+ spectrums
• Standardized 6 proven spectrums for commercial use
• Supporting production of 125 million plants annually across 4 countries
Our focused solutions:
1. TSGL8 R (Retrofit for existing labs)
• Direct replacement for CFL lights
• No rewiring required (ballast removal only)
• Lower power consumption with better efficiency
2. TSGL8 C2/C3 (Linear solution)
• Suitable for new and upgraded labs
• Uniform lighting across racks (no dark spots)
• Plug-and-play system with up to 80% wiring cost reduction
Result:
Better growth, lower energy cost, and higher operational efficiency.
If you are working on tissue culture, lighting is not just a component — it is a key performance driver.

🌱 Basic Growing Protocol for Indoor Microgreens
As we are conducting trials and supplying lights for indoor microgreen farms, we observed a simple protocol that works consistently well.
Here are the key parameters:
🌡 Temperature
Ideal range: 18°C – 24°C
• Warmer side → Faster growth, but higher mold risk
• Cooler side → Slower growth, but stronger stems
💧 Humidity
Ideal range: 40% – 60% RH
Balanced humidity helps avoid fungal issues.
🌬 Airflow
Gentle air movement.
Leaves should show a slight “shiver.”
This improves stem strength and reduces mold risk.
💡 Lighting
• Spectrum – Nx6.2
• Intensity – 120–180 µmol/m²/s
• Photoperiod – 16 hours per day
Microgreens are sensitive but predictable when environment is controlled properly.

Growing Edible Flowers? Your Spectrum Matters More Than You Think.
In edible flower cultivation, small differences in light can create visible differences in quality.
While nutrients and climate are important, spectrum plays a key role in:
• Colour vibrancy
• Aroma and flavour
• Growth consistency
Edible flowers are now growing beautifully under our HYGL8 N4B lights.
Our specialized spectrum is designed to provide the right light balance for premium flower quality — even in challenging climates like Dubai.
When growing high-value crops, precision in lighting makes a measurable impact.
If you would like to understand how the right spectrum can support your edible flower cultivation, our team will be happy to guide you. 🌿
