A Deeper Understanding of the Flute's Soul 16/02/2026

I explain why the tanpura is an essential part of Dhrupad flute training at Dhrupad Gurukul. The tanpura’s rich overtones help a bansuri student discover precise shrutis and develop a sensitive musical ear. Its steady drone provides a living reference for tuning, breath alignment, and the spacious unfolding of a raga. Plucking the tanpura also cultivates laya and concentration, preparing the mind for the slow, contemplative alap of the Dhrupad tradition.

At Dhrupad Gurukul—teaching both curved bansuri technique and vocal practice through the traditional gurukul method—students learn how a physical tanpura interacts with room acoustics to create the sympathetic resonance digital drones cannot fully reproduce. This practice supports deeper listening and a more three-dimensional musical experience.

Calm, structured practice accelerates depth. Here are three foundational exercises for beginners learning the Dhrupad bansuri: 1) Breath shaping: practice long, steady exhalations on a single pitch for 4–6 counts, focusing on even tone and support from the diaphragm. 2) Slow alaap development: improvise a one-minute, unmetered phrase exploring microtonal inflections and sustained notes to cultivate phrasing and the gurukul ear. 3) Posture and hold for the curved bansuri: align the spine, relax the shoulders, and position the flute so the embouchure naturally centers; repeat short scales while maintaining this posture. Each exercise is rooted in the gurukul method’s gradual transmission and emphasizes the bansuri’s warm, rounded timbre. Calling aspiring musicians in Pune and online: try this sequence three times a week and note subtle shifts in tone and control. Learn more at https://wix.to/Mhza4W3
