The Production Gap Report, first launched in 2019, measures the discrepancy or gap between governments’ planned production of fossil fuels against global production levels consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C.

The latest report published on 20th October 2021 finds that despite increased climate commitments, world governments plan to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C. Collective projections depict an increase in production over the next two decades, thus creating a widening gap. With this, the report verifies that current plans are dangerously out of sync with the Paris Agreement temperature limits. With our window of opportunity rapidly closing, we must strengthen measures to address both the demand and supply of fossil fuels, ensure a managed and equitable transition, and close the gap.
