The kitchen in the existing house was a quiet but important part of the transformation.

Earlier, it felt enclosed and inward-looking, with small openings and very little relationship with the landscape outside. Like many rooms in the old house, it functioned adequately, but it did not fully respond to the garden that surrounded it.

While reworking the house, we wanted the kitchen to feel brighter and more connected without treating it as an isolated makeover. The renewed kitchen now looks out toward the verandah and the clay-jaali screen beyond. The window brings in light, air and small glimpses of the life around the house, allowing the act of cooking to feel less cut off from the rest of the home.
The material palette was kept simple and domesticโ€”blue cabinetry, a light counter, timber-framed openings and textured wall tiles.

The intent was not to make the kitchen feel new for the sake of it, but to let it settle naturally into the renewed character of the house.

In a house shaped by restraint, even a functional room like the kitchen became an opportunity to bring in more light, air and everyday ease.

The existing entrance opened into a narrow passage lined with doors, with a washbasin directly in view. It provided access to the rooms, but offered little sense of orientation or welcome.

While reworking the house, we wanted the entry lobby to do more than distribute movement. It needed to gently introduce the interiors, establish a clearer relationship between the spaces, and allow the transition from outside to inside to continue beyond the verandah.

The renewed lobby is therefore kept simple and visually open. Timber frames mark the thresholds without closing them off, while the continuous green panelling ties the passage to the adjoining living spaces. Natural light is drawn deeper into the house, and glimpses toward the verandah and screened stair help one understand the larger spatial sequence soon after entering.

We did not want the lobby to become a formal room of its own. It remains a place of movementโ€”but one that now offers a moment to arrive, orient oneself and choose where to go next.

The original entrance passageโ€”enclosed, dimly lit and primarily organised for circulation.

The living space now opens more clearly toward the lobby, allowing the rooms to feel connected without losing their individual character.

The screened edge of the house- the entry verandah, drawing light, landscape and movement into the experience of arrival.

A passage that once merely led from one room to another now helps make sense of the home as a whole.
