Have you ever wondered why two people can eat the same number of calories but lose weight very differently?

For decades, we've been told that fat loss is simply a matter of Calories In vs. Calories Out (CICO). While energy balance is a fundamental principle of physiology, it doesn't explain how the body regulates hunger, metabolism, or fat storage.

Your body is not a calculator.

Hormones such as insulin, leptin, ghrelin, cortisol, and thyroid hormones continuously influence appetite, energy expenditure, and where calories are stored or used. This is why two diets with identical calories can produce very different metabolic outcomes.

Research also shows that:
• Protein has a thermic effect of 20–30%, meaning your body expends more energy digesting it than carbohydrates (5–10%) or fats (0–3%).
• Prolonged calorie restriction can reduce resting metabolic rate by 5–25%, increase hunger hormones, and lower satiety signals, a phenomenon known as metabolic adaptation.
• Highly processed foods often stimulate greater calorie intake while providing less satiety than minimally processed, nutrient-dense foods.

This doesn't mean CICO is "wrong." It means the equation describes the outcome, not the biological processes that determine it.

The real question isn't just "How many calories am I eating?"

It's "What is influencing my metabolism, hunger, and energy expenditure?"

When you improve your metabolic health, maintaining a healthy weight becomes far more sustainable.

Most people blame their metabolism when weight loss stalls. Few realise that prolonged sitting may be part of the problem.

Sedentary physiology describes the metabolic changes that occur when skeletal muscles remain inactive for long periods. As muscle contractions decrease, glucose uptake slows, insulin sensitivity declines, and fat oxidation becomes less efficient. Over time, this metabolic environment can contribute to insulin resistance, increased visceral fat, and a higher risk of metabolic disorders.

Research has shown that these effects can occur even in people who meet the recommended exercise guidelines if they spend most of their day sitting.

The good news? Your metabolism responds to consistent movement. Standing regularly, walking after meals, resistance training, and metabolically appropriate nutrition can significantly improve glucose regulation and metabolic flexibility.

Small habits, repeated daily, have a far greater impact on metabolic health than most people realise.

Testosterone is often viewed through the lens of hormones, aging, or performance. But emerging evidence suggests that the conversation may need to start with metabolism.

Research has consistently shown associations between low testosterone and metabolic dysfunction, including insulin resistance, visceral adiposity, obesity, and Type 2 Diabetes. The relationship is bidirectional: metabolic dysfunction can suppress testosterone production, while low testosterone may further worsen body composition and glucose regulation.

This is why symptoms such as fatigue, increased abdominal fat, reduced muscle mass, and poor exercise recovery should not always be dismissed as a normal consequence of aging.

In many cases, testosterone may be reflecting a deeper metabolic imbalance.

Addressing insulin resistance, improving body composition, prioritizing sleep, and building metabolic flexibility can support not only metabolic health but also hormonal health.

Because hormones rarely function in isolation.
