It is a moment of great pride as the research paper authored and internationally presented by Abhishek Kumar Singh, during his tenure as President of the SME NIT Rourkela Student Chapter, has been selected for the prestigious 🏅 Stefanko Best Paper Award by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME), USA. This achievement marks a remarkable global recognition of student-led research excellence from India.

🌎 The paper was presented on an international platform at the MINEXCHANGE 2025 SME Annual Conference & Expo held in Denver, Colorado, USA, showcasing innovative research from NIT Rourkela to the global mining community.

🧭 The Stefanko Best Paper Award was selected by the Stefanko Best Paper Award Committee and the Coal & Energy Division Executive Committee of SME USA, comprised of leading international experts in mining and energy.

🏆 The award, which includes a commemorative plaque and a prize of $1,000, will be formally presented at the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

📝 The awarded paper, “Assessment of Impact of Dirt Bands on Coal Pillar Strength at Different Depths of Cover – A Numerical Simulation Study,” represents a pioneering contribution to underground coal pillar research.

SME NIT Rourkela Student Chapter held a full-body meet on 22nd August, 2025, at the Seminar Room of the Mining Engineering Department, NIT Rourkela. The meeting was presided over by our faculty advisor, Dr. Sahendra Ram. The agenda was to formulate a plan of action for the Student Chapter regarding the upcoming activities and events to be conducted. The procedure to be followed for the orientation and induction sessions for new members, along with the selection of new EB members, was also discussed. Similar monthly meetings will be conducted in the future to discuss the roadmap to be followed. GDN Raju has been announced as the President for the Chapter, and SME NIT Rourkela Student Chapter extends him best wishes for his tenure!✨🙌🏼
