Deficiency of folic acid can cause
1) megaloblastic anemia
2) homocystenemia which can give rise to cardiovascular problems
3) Neural tube defects like spina bifida & anencephaly in the developing foetus in a pregnant woman

Causes of folic acid deficiency are
1) Increased demand as in pregnancy
2) drug interactions such as in patients who are on anti epileptics like phenytoin & phenobarbitone
3) dietary deficiency
4) in patients who have undergone gastrointestinal surgeries as folic acid is absorbed in jejunum or a portion of small intestine

Dietary sources which are rich in folic acid are
1) green leafy vegetables like spinach & beans
2) fruits like papaya & oranges
