Software development is a process that unfolds within an environment that has its own forces that impact the decisions made by the practitioner. How big is the change? How tight is the deadline? Is there enough time to clean this design, or can I make a tactical change and move on?
A force experienced by the author is one in which the business technology fabric has codified structure into its datums. In example 1 above, it was deemed the business has-always-and-will-always codify an order id by encoding sections of it to represent multiple concepts from a single value - the order id. When weighing up design decisions, something as immutable as order ids that have existed in a specific form since the company was established, seem like stable ideas to be depending our code on. There may even be times when that is true, but such decisions when allowed to infiltrate a codebase, can be an insidious form of coupling that will likely be fine, until it becomes apparent the encoding doesn’t support the next growth phase of the organization. When that happens, the coupling of this knowledge of how the order id (deemed likely never to change), becomes a maintenance nightmare.
