Bharat Taxi is India’s first government-backed, driver-owned cooperative ride-hailing platform, officially launched by Union Minister Amit Shah on February 5, 2026.

Operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited (STCL), it is designed as a direct alternative to private aggregators like Uber and Ola. Its model is inspired by successful cooperatives like Amul, with Amul’s MD Jayen Mehta serving as chairman.

Key Features for Passengers

Lower Fares: Rides are estimated to be up to 30% cheaper than private competitors because the platform does not take a per-ride commission.
No Surge Pricing: The platform promises predictable, fixed fares even during peak hours or bad weather.

Integrated Safety: The app is directly linked to the Delhi Police control room and features SOS buttons and real-time tracking.

Diverse Options: Commuters can book bike taxis, auto-rickshaws, and various cab categories (AC, non-AC, XL).

Metro Connectivity: Integrated with the Delhi Metro (DMRC), providing organized last-mile connectivity at major stations.

The “Sarathi Hi Malik” Model for Drivers
The core philosophy is “Sarathi Hi Malik” (The driver is the owner), where drivers are shareholders rather than gig workers.

Zero Commission: Drivers keep 100% of the fare. Instead of a percentage-based cut, they pay a flat daily platform access fee of ₹30 (₹18 for autos).
Ownership Stake: Drivers join the cooperative by purchasing shares (minimum 5 shares for ₹500), entitling them to dividends and profit sharing.

Social Security: Registered “Sarathis” receive ₹5 lakh personal accident insurance and ₹5 lakh family health insurance.

No Exclusivity: Drivers are free to use other platforms simultaneously while retaining their cooperative rights.

Availability and Reach :
As of February 2026, the service is fully operational in Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot. The government plans to expand the service nationwide to all states and major cities within the next two years.
