Indian Himalaya Region (IHR) and Nepal and Bhutan

The Himalayan Region is the section of the Himalayas within India, Nepal and Bhutan, spanning the northern Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, as well as the hill regions of two eastern states, Assam and West Bengal along with Himalayan countries of Nepal and the Last Shangri-La, Bhutan.

The Himalayan region is responsible for providing water to a large part of the Indian subcontinent and contains various flora and fauna.

Some of the highest mountains on earth are found in the region. Many rivers considered holy like the Ganga and Yamuna flow from the Himalayas.

The maintenance of the ecological health of the Indian Himalayan region (IHR) is imperative. The IHR stretches about 2,400 km across the northern border of India, covering an area of about 500,000 sq km. It affects climate, water security, and livelihoods in the region — both upstream and downstream. The IHR extends from the Indus River in the west to the Brahmaputra River in the east. The mountain ranges and river basins share trans boundary connectedness. Six countries in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region share borders with India.

India Tourism run an active campaign 'Incredible Himalaya‘ to promote various destinations, culture, culinary, wildlife of Indian Himalayan Region.

Now we will go through few interesting stats on India tourism as tourism potential on Indian Himalaya Region.

The 11th Five Year Plan of India’s Planning Commission states, “Tourism is the largest service industry in the country”. Its importance lies in being an instrument for economic development and employment generation, particularly in remote and backward areas (e.g., in IHR)”

India’s travel and tourism sector ranks 7th in the world in terms of its total contribution to the country’s GDP, according to a new report of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). According to data, the travel and tourism sector generated Rs 14.1 trillion (USD208.9 billion) in 2016, which is world’s 7th largest in terms of absolute size; the sum is equivalent to 9.6% of India’s GDP.

Additionally, the sector created 40.3 million jobs in 2016, which ranks India 2nd in the world in terms of total employment generated. The sector accounts for 9.3% of the country’s total jobs. India’s Travel and Tourism sector was also the fastest growing amongst the G20 countries, growing by 8.5% in 2016

With these immense potential and scope, there are many hurdles which we as a stakeholder needs to cross. From Pir Panjal Range to Brahmaputra River Basin in Arunachal there are numerous options as well as problems.

We as stakeholders can join our hands to cross all the hurdles for the betterment of the industry as a whole. For this we propose the new network ‘Himalayan Hospitality and Tourism Development Network’ to act fast with all of your kind support and blessings.
