PAHALGAM — A tragic incident cast a shadow over a family's weekend leisure trip on Sunday, as a 42-year-old man from Srinagar went missing and is feared dead after jumping into the fast-flowing Lidder River to rescue his son.
According to local authorities, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, a resident of Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar, who worked as an air-conditioner mechanic in the private sector, had traveled to the famous tourist resort of Pahalgam with his family for a vacation.
The incident occurred near the Langanbal area close to the Kolahoi Green Hotel. The family was reportedly taking photographs along the scenic banks of the river when Mir's son, Fahad, accidentally lost his footing and slipped into the strong, rapid currents of the stream.
Witnessing his son being swept away, Mohammad Ashraf Mir immediately dived into the river in a desperate attempt to pull him to safety. While alert locals and bystanders managed to quickly intervene and successfully rescue the young boy, Mir lost his footing against the powerful current and was carried downstream.
A massive search and rescue operation was launched immediately by the local administration. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), alongside local rafters and volunteers, have been deployed to scour the river. Search efforts are actively continuing to trace the missing man.
