Rani Lakshmibai (Queen of Jhansi) Birth Name: Manikarnika Tambe Birth: 19 November 1828, Varanasi Death: 18 June 1858, Gwalior Rani Lakshmibai was the great heroine of India and a major leader of the first freedom struggle of 1857. She was married to Maharaja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi. During the rebellion of 1857, when the British tried to capture Jhansi under the “Doctrine of Lapse”, the queen fought bravely. She fought the war sitting on a horse, taking her adopted son with her and fought bravely till the end. His famous statement is considered to be: “I will not give away my Jhansi.” Even today Rani Lakshmibai is considered a symbol of courage, patriotism and women power.
