Ayya vaikunda Smarakam-A library and cultural centre, rooted in the life and philosophy of Ayya vaikunda swamikal,is a democratic space for knowledge and expression.
The building is a collage of materiality from two distinct architecture styles he was a part of, the stone masonry from Dravidian architecture and the wood and clay language of kerala. The built form is designed in the formal quality of the ’ chuttambalam’, resembling a temple, which once restricted the lower castes including Ayya Vaikundar.
But here the deity is replaced by a space of knowledge and expressions enabling self reflection, inspired from the Kannadi Prathishta (mirror installation) by Swami Ayya vaikunda swamikal in early 1800’s.
The library, children’s library, amphitheater and the performance space
Ayya Vaikunda Smarakam-a library and cultural centre, rooted in the life and philosophy of Ayya vaikunda swamikal the acts as an extended city, inviting everyone in its democratic space for knowledge and expression
Knowledge is complete only when one could express the acquired knowledge, the building renders an opportunity for that, the library in the building is placed at the centre , surrounded by spaces of knowledge expressions , the amphitheatre, the coworking spaces, workshops and the continuous ramp for art exhibitions.
Here the building doubles up as an extended street resembling the city’s manaveeyam veedhi . Open to expressions and debates, the building becomes a reflection of the city of Trivandrum it is a part of.

SETBACK GARDENS OF SEMIBUILDING-SEMILANDSCAPE
In a site, where exterior space for gardens are limited to setbacks, landscape finds place in setback these pockets and the roof that thrive with a diverse palette of plants, trees and water: a melange landscape of nostalgia-evoking forgotten local and naturalised plants.
