This is Kerry, 4 years old, my beloved furry family member. I adopted him from a local shelter in June 2024, after his previous owners surrendered him due to family and financial struggles.

I still remember the first day I brought him home, he was scared, unsure, and quietly grieving the life he lost. But over time, he found comfort, safety, and love with us.

Fast-forward 1.5 years, Kerry is no longer that frightened dog. He’s the heart of our home.

He runs to the door when my kids come back from school. He sleeps curled up between them during thunderstorms. He has become their best friend, their emotional support, their happiness.

But now… everything feels shaken.

Kerry’s previous owner has suddenly contacted me, demanding him back, saying there were “mistakes” in the surrender process. My heart dropped reading that message.

How do I even imagine tearing Kerry away from the only stability he has known for the past year and a half? How do I explain to my children that the dog who’s been with them through every moment, every laugh, every tear, every night... might be taken away?

They’re devastated. And honestly… so am I.

I’m also confused and worried.
Are shelter staff even allowed to disclose these kinds of details to former owners?
Is this normal?
What are my rights?
What is Kerry’s best interest?

I want to do what’s right but I also want to protect the little soul who trusted us enough to rebuild his life.

What should I do now? If anyone has faced something similar, please share your thoughts, experiences, or advice. Your words might help us make the best decision for Kerry.

🐶 “The purest kind of love is the one that comes with a wagging tail.”

If humans loved the way dogs do — with loyalty, forgiveness, and endless kindness — the world would know peace. Their hearts don’t hold grudges, only devotion.

Dogs don’t care what you look like, what you’ve done, or what you own. They care how you treat them — and that pure simplicity could change everything if we learned from it.

They’re proof that love doesn’t need words or perfection. Just presence, honesty, and heart. ❤️🐾
