Fear of speaking comes from the natural protection system of your brain. Your brain is designed to keep you safe from danger. When you stand in front of people to speak, your brain sometimes thinks it is a risky or dangerous situation. It sends a signal to your body to activate fear so that you stay alert. Because of this, your body shows physical reactions such as fast heartbeat, sweaty hands, shaking voice, and nervousness. These reactions are not harmful. They are your body’s normal response to pressure. Fear also increases when there is a lack of practice and lack of preparation. When you are not fully prepared, your mind feels unsure, and this creates fear. Low confidence is another reason. If you do not believe in yourself, your brain assumes you may fail. Overthinking also creates fear. When you think too much about what could go wrong, your fear becomes stronger. Negative thinking, such as “I will fail” or “I am not a good speaker,” also increases fear. It is very important to understand that fear is natural. It is not a weakness. Every speaker, even experienced professionals, feels some level of fear. Fear only means your mind and body are preparing you for an important moment. With regular practice, good preparation, and positive thinking, your brain slowly understands that speaking is safe. As a result, your fear reduces and your confidence grows.
