At SND, you don’t just shop the textile, you experience the city it comes from.

As custodians of Benaras through the lens of craft, we take you beyond the product, into its looms, its streets, its stories, offering not just a purchase, but a deeper understanding of all that this city holds.

Where every thread remembers, and every weave reimagines.

At Shah Narayan Das, Banarasi is not just preserved, it is pushed forward. Since 1913, our looms have carried a legacy of intricate craftsmanship, evolving with every generation to create textiles that are as complex as they are timeless.

Rooted in heritage, driven by innovation, each weave is a quiet move against the ordinary.

Not all silk is created equal.

The real ones don’t shout. They reveal themselves slowly, in the slight irregularity of a weave,
in the weight that settles on the body,
in a drape that holds, remembers, and moves with intention.

Handwoven silk is never perfect.
And that is precisely its beauty.

Studies in Woven Silk

This stack of fabrics presents a comparative view of Benarasi silk surface vocabularies—variations in lustre, drape, and micro-motif articulation.

Each textile reflects a distinct technical strategy, revealing how silk behaves under differing weave structures and zari integrations.

India’s textile story is entering a powerful new chapter. As the world’s second-largest producer, the industry is expanding with quiet confidence, led by the rising global appetite for silk. For businesses and connoisseurs alike, this is not just growth, but a defining moment of opportunity.

Woven in 1994, this saree is where Benares meets New York.

Inspired by the iconic New York skyline, the design captures the bold geometry and towering rhythm of a modern metropolis—translated into the language of Banarasi weaving. Crafted using the Kadwa and Reverse Cutwork techniques, the process begins with a warp of rich black tussar silk, forming a dramatic canvas.

Across this base, coloured yarns are thrown through the weft, and each motif is individually handwoven, rising like the silhouettes of skyscrapers against the night sky. The final step is what makes the piece extraordinary—the black yarns in the backdrop are carefully cut away, revealing the intricate skyline pattern beneath.

The result is a saree that feels both architectural and artisanal—a striking dialogue between the heritage of Benares and the ambition of a global city.

The hands that make the process beautiful at SND.
Our expertise goes far beyond creation—it lies in building a textile from the very beginning. From dyeing and printing to the final finish, every step is guided by knowledge, precision, and human skill. A glimpse into our dyeing unit, where colour is not applied, but carefully brought to life.

SND is not just a textile innovation company—it is a textile think tank.

A space where knowledge is documented, textures are studied, and craft is examined with intent.

Through structured research and material exploration, SND formulates case studies that go beyond seasons—creating a living archive for generations to study, reference, and build upon. This body of work on texture is one such chapter, where surface, structure, and hand-feel are analysed as both sensory and cultural language.

At SND, innovation is not an end goal. It is a method—rooted in inquiry, rigour, and the responsibility of shaping the future of Indian textiles.
