🔍 Fiber Optic Cable Quality Checklist: Don't Buy Junk!
✅ Physical Inspection
→ Jacket Smoothness: No bumps, bubbles, or uneven thickness
→ Markings Clarity: Printed (not just stickered) with fiber type (SMF/MMF), length, and standards
→ Connector Polish: UPC/APC ends should be mirror-smooth under light
✅ Performance Verification
→ Attenuation Test: ≤0.2dB/km for single-mode (use power meter)
→ Bend Test: Bend-insensitive fibers should show no light loss at 10mm radius
→ Tensile Strength: Should withstand >100N pull force without performance drop
✅ Manufacturer Trust
→ Compliance Certificates: ISO 9001, TIA/EIA, IEC
→ Full Traceability: Batch numbers and test reports available
→ Warranty: Minimum 15-20 years for outdoor cables

What Kind of Fiber Cable is Used for “Fiber to the Home”?
Drop Cables:
The final cable connecting the external network to your home is called a "drop cable" or "indoor-outdoor cable." It's designed to be durable, flexible, and easy to install. There are several common types:
1. Indoor/Outdoor Drop Cable (e.g., GJXFH, GJYFH)
This is a very common all-rounder. It has a tough yet flexible outer jacket (typically LSZH or PVC) that can withstand some outdoor exposure but is also safe and clean for running inside your home. It's often flat and bend-insensitive, making it easy to route along baseboards or through tight corners.
2. Tight-Buffered Cable (e.g., 2-6 core bundled optical cable)
Often used for the final segment inside the building. Each fiber has a thick protective coating, making it robust for direct termination with connectors, perfect for in-home wiring from the entry point to your Optical Network Terminal (ONT).
3. Figure-8 Aerial Drop Cable (e.g., GJYXCH, small figure-8 cable)
If the cable comes to your house via a telephone pole, it might be a self-supporting "Figure-8" cable. It has a strong messenger wire integrated into its design, allowing it to be strung overhead without a separate support line.

How to Choose the Right Jacket Material for Your Fiber Optic Cable?
A Quick Comparison⬇⬇
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
- General Indoor Use (Offices, Homes)
- Releases dense, toxic smoke when burned. Not suitable for plenum spaces.
- Cost-effective, flexible, and durable for stable environments.
LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen)
- Safety-Critical Indoor Areas (Data Centers, Hospitals, Public Transport)
- Flame-retardant. Produces minimal smoke and no corrosive/toxic halogen gases if burned.
- Higher cost than PVC, but often mandated by building and fire codes for public safety.
PE (Polyethylene)
- Outdoor & Direct Burial Use (Aerial, Underground, Ducts)
- Excellent waterproofing, UV resistance, and handles extreme temperatures (-40°C to +70°C).
- Very stiff, not flexible for indoor runs. Not flame-retardant.
Your 3-Step Selection Guide
1. Identify the Installation Environment: Is it Indoor, Outdoor, or Both? This is your first filter.
2. Check Safety and Building Codes: For indoor installations, LSZH is frequently required by law in plenums (air circulation spaces), risers, and public buildings.
3. Assess Specific Environmental Threats: For outdoor use, consider moisture, UV exposure, temperature swings, and potential rodent damage.
