When a cancer becomes resistant to the drugs that had seemed to be working so well, the next step is to switch to a new treatment - but how to know which one?
Currently, genetic information is often used to help select which new treatment to go with, but this doesn't guarantee that the best choice is being made. In order to be able to better select which new therapies would now work best, researchers have worked to develop a procedure that would allow them to collect drug-resistant lung tumour cells from a patient and culture them, for use in testing.
In theory, these cultures could be used to more accurately screen for that patient's cancer's sensitivity to various therapies.
