Optimizing Electrical Safety in Industrial Networks with Neutral Grounding Resistors (NGRs)
In industrial electrical network design, effective grounding is essential for safety and reliability. One of the most popular grounding solutions is the Neutral Grounding Resistor (NGR). This system provides critical benefits, including better fault management and voltage control.
Why Use a Neutral Grounding Resistor?
In ungrounded systems, several issues can arise, such as:
1. Resonance faults from switching over voltages.
2. Increased risk of simultaneous single-phase faults escalating to phase-to-phase faults.
3. High phase voltage and insulation damage during single-phase faults due to an unstable neutral.
By incorporating an NGR, these issues are mitigated, enhancing overall network safety and performance. NGRs are specifically valuable in AC networks with balanced loads, where they reduce fault current to manageable levels during single-phase short circuits, helping protect network components even if disconnection is delayed.
Key Advantages of NGRs According to IEEE Standard 142-1991:
• Minimized damage from melting and burning at short-circuit points.
• Reduced mechanical stress on equipment during fault conditions.
• Lowered risk of electric shock for personnel from single-phase fault currents.
• Decreased arc flash hazards near single-phase faults.
• Mitigated overvoltage impact on other phases in case of a short circuit.
• Suppressed transient over voltages from short circuits.
Implementing NGR technology is a smart step toward resilient, efficient, and safe industrial networks.
Curious to learn more about how NGRs can enhance your electrical network? Let’s connect and discuss ways to optimize your system’s grounding approach!

🔧 Boost Pipeline and Tank Protection with Ribbon MMO Anodes ⚡
Ribbon MMO anodes are used to cathodic protection of pipelines and tanks. The titanium substrate of these anodes is selected according to ASTM B265 Grade 1 standard requirements. A Conductor bar is used to connect the ribbon anodes to each other and impressed current into the anode lattice. The conductor bar is pure titanium and its chemical composition complies with ASTM B265 Grade 1. Ribbon MMO anodes and conductors are interconnected at the tanks bottom and connected to each other using spot welding. Titanium power feed is used to connect the rectifier transformer positive cable to the anodic lattice of the tanks bottom. Power feed connection to the anodic lattice is also accomplished by spot welding.

🌊 Ensuring Long-Term Protection for Marine Pipelines 🛡️
Marine pipelines may either be buried on the seabed or in direct contact with seawater. Cathodic protection is used as a complement to coating systems, which may be applied alone or with a concrete jacket. Typically, sacrificial anode protection is used due to its simplicity and lack of need for electricity. Aluminum or zinc anodes are commonly used, with aluminum being more popular due to its higher current capacity. These bracelet-shaped anodes are placed around the pipeline and are usually composed of two parts connected via welding or bolts.
In marine pipeline cathodic protection, anodes are installed at equal distances along the pipeline to ensure proper protection. The number, shape, and position of the anodes are determined based on calculations and the designer's experience. The design must ensure that all areas receive adequate protection without excessive overlap, which could result in premature anode consumption. Electrical connections between the anode cables and the pipeline are made through direct welding or clamps.
With over 30 years of experience, Borna Electronics is ready to provide design, equipment supply, consultation, and implementation services for marine pipeline cathodic protection systems.

MMO Anodes: The Perfect Solution for Cathodic Protection ⚡
MMO anodes are consist of two pants: base metal and coating. Using Titanium as the base metal is because of having necessary characteristics for receiving coating to resistance against aggressive chemical environments and it’s appropriate conductivity. Other benefits of titanium include its lightness and use in various forms, including tube, ribbon, wire, mesh and sheets.
MMO Anodes coating are very thin (a few microns) and they can be operated on the base metal in different ways. Depend on the form of usage these coatings can be mixed of two or more metal oxides such as Iridium oxides, Tantalum oxides, Ruthenium oxides and Titanium oxides.

Prevent Corrosion in Aboveground Storage Tanks! 🛢️
Internal corrosion of aboveground storage tanks is a major issue causing significant losses in the oil and gas industries each year. Internal cathodic protection of tanks is used as a complementary method to coatings, or sometimes independently, to prevent corrosion. The type and thickness of the coating used in tanks are crucial in determining the required cathodic protection current. Internal cathodic protection of tanks can be done using sacrificial anodes or impressed current systems, with sacrificial anodes being the more common method.
In cathodic protection using sacrificial anodes, depending on the electrolyte type, its electrical resistivity, and whether it is flammable, aluminum, zinc, or magnesium anodes are used. According to certain technical standards, such as the Iranian Oil Standard, only zinc anodes should be used in flammable electrolytes to avoid the risk of sparks and explosions. For drinking water tanks, high-potential magnesium anodes or approved health-safe alloys are recommended since the ions released from aluminum and zinc anodes can be harmful to health.
With over 30 years of experience, Borna Electronics is ready to design, supply, consult, and implement internal cathodic protection systems for tanks, along with installing monitoring systems for cathodic protection.

🔧 Unlock the Power of Aluminum Anodes for Cathodic Protection 🌊
The main use of aluminum anodes is for cathodic protection in seawater. However, these anodes can also be used in rare cases in fresh water or soil. Aluminum anodes are mainly used for cathodic protection of jetties piles, jackets, internal protection of storage tanks, external protection of submarine pipelines, etc.
To prevent the formation of an aluminum oxide layer on the anode surface, which greatly reduces the anode’s efficiency, an active element such as mercury or indium is commonly used in the chemical composition of aluminum anodes. In the past, mercury was used in the chemical composition of aluminum anodes. Although the amount of mercury in the alloy was low, with the use of the anode main body, this amount of mercury remained in the material and its concentration increased, which caused many environmental problems. Today the use of mercury in aluminum anodes is almost obsolete and the indium element is used as an activator.

🚢 Protect Your Structures with Zinc Anodes! 🛡️
Zinc anodes are used to protect structures submerged in fresh or saline water. The main use of these anodes are in cathodic protection of the hull and balance tanks of ships and vessels, internal protection of storage tanks and external protection of submarine pipelines, etc.
However, zinc anodes are used to protect buried structures in the soil, such as oil and gas pipelines, the bottom and the external body of storage tanks where soil resistivity is lower and their use is more cost-effective than magnesium anodes.
Zinc anodes are divided into two categories in terms of chemical composition and type of application:
A) Marine zinc alloy (Type I) designed for use in seawater.
B) Standard zinc alloy (Type II) formulated for use in fresh water and soil.

How Fast is Corrosion in the Presence of Cathodic Protection?
In practice, cathodic protection (CP) doesn't completely stop corrosion, but it significantly slows it down to an acceptable rate. According to ISO standards, CP can reduce the corrosion rate to less than 10 micrometers per year. AMPP defines this rate as 25 micrometers (1 mil inch) per year. Over a 30-year structure lifespan, a reduction of 300-750 micrometers is expected, which is quite minimal. For a buried pipeline with proper coating, corrosion in damaged areas might be less than 1mm after 30 years, while fully insulated areas experience no corrosion. Successful CP systems have been known to keep metal surfaces shiny and intact even after decades of service.
