Our Hungarian partner, / , recently held an incredibly informative online capacity-building workshop on 18 June 2026, focusing on Hungary's rapid transition toward Green Public Procurement (GPP)!

Expert public procurement consultant Tímea Varga walked participants through the practical strategies and strict environmental rules that are changing the game for local businesses:
• 📈 The 30% Goal: By 2027, nearly a third of all public procurements in Hungary must be green!
• 🍎 Supporting Local Food: Public catering tenders now feature a Short Supply Chain Mandate, requiring at least 80% of food value to come from local producers or with a maximum of one intermediary.
• 🚗 Clean Utility Fleets: Public sectors must now meet strict minimum quotas for "clean" or zero-emission passenger and freight vehicles.
• 🪵 Green Furniture & Supplies: Office procurement must meet strict benchmarks—like furniture requiring 70% certified wood (FSC/PEFC) and copying paper containing at least 50% recycled fibers.
• 🏗️ Smarter Building Projects: Future public construction must calculate transport emissions, reward waste reduction on-site, and design with passive energy and biodiversity in mind.

This CE-PRINCE session proved that sustainability is no longer just a trend—it is a measurable, legal standard that is reshaping the market. If a business wants to win public contracts in the future, going green is rapidly becoming the only way forward!

As heatwaves roll across Europe this month and climate impacts dominate the headlines, the choices we make around sustainable resource management are more critical than ever.

🇦🇹That is why we are looking back at a vital block of capacity-building workshops hosted by our Austrian partner, SFG, in Graz. While these sessions kicked off as the summer was just beginning, the intense weather we are experiencing right now highlights exactly why their focus - sustainable public procurement and circular food systems - demands our attention today.

When public sectors change how they buy food, they directly impact climate resilience. Here is a retrospective look at how these sessions mapped out the future:
• 🌾 Circular Food Procurement in Practice (The NaBe Platform): Public sector decision-makers gathered to learn how to systematically use Austria's NaBe platform. The focus was on embedding strict criteria for regionality, seasonality, and food waste reduction directly into public contracts for schools, municipalities, and community kitchens.
• 🔄 Driving Regional Value Chains: Institutional caterers and tourism stakeholders collaborated on case studies from the restaurant and catering sectors. The main takeaway? Buying circular and local doesn't just cut carbon emissions—it strengthens the economic resilience of local food producers when the climate throws curveballs.

The Bottom Line: Extreme summer weather reminds us that incremental planning is no longer enough. The strategic networks and tools established during these Austrian workshops feed directly into the CE-PRINCE Action Plan, giving public authorities the blueprint to fight rising temperatures with smarter purchasing power. 🔄💚

We broke down complex policies into practical tools that save money and protect our environment.

👉 A €30k–€40k Success Story: The City of Lund (Sweden) proved that circularity pays! By simply inventorying reusable materials during a school demolition, they saved tens of thousands of Euros and established a long-term strategy for circular construction.

👉 The "Cost Paradox": Our latest research shows that businesses are ready to supply green solutions (36%), but public tenders are lagging behind (only 22% include circular criteria). The issue isn't budget—it's about upgrading tender criteria and boosting procurement skills.

👉 Mandatory Rules are Coming: By the end of the decade, EU green procurement criteria will transition from voluntary to mandatory. Starting training and pilot testing today is the most cost-effective way to prepare.
