Our Maymester Duquesne University School of Nursing students were honored to attend the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. Prior to the event, they researched four nurses who gave their lives while serving on the front lines during World War II, making this tribute especially meaningful as future nurses honoring those who embodied the profession’s highest ideals of courage, compassion, and service. 🙏

Alongside students from IIS Einstein-Bachelet High School, President-Elect Dr. David Dausey, U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta, and members of the U.S. and Italian armed forces, our students stood in quiet gratitude for lives devoted to protecting others. For many, the most powerful moments came not in speeches, but in reflection—recognizing the shared humanity that connects generations across time, language, and borders.

In honoring those who sacrificed everything, our students were reminded that nursing is not only a profession, but a calling rooted in dignity, empathy, and hope. May we never forget the cost of war, and may the memory of the fallen strengthen our commitment to peace, compassion, and the care of one another. 🇺🇸 🇮🇹

As we conclude the 3rd edition of HEAL — Health, Education, Awareness & Longevity in the Mediterranean — our hearts are full. ♥️

In the weeks ahead, we look forward to sharing the incredible experiences of learning, cultural connection to Italy and the Cilento region, and the rich interdisciplinary collaboration among nursing and physical therapy students, global scholars, healthcare professionals, and the people of Pioppi.

This journey reminded us that healthcare is not only about knowledge and skill, but also about humanity, compassion, community, and learning how slowing down can help us better care for ourselves, our patients, and the world around us. The Mediterranean lifestyle showed us the beauty of wellness through simple daily actions and meaningful connection.

Most of all, we are grateful for our students — truly one of the best groups ever. Their kindness, professionalism, curiosity, and joy made this experience unforgettable. They reminded us why Duquesne is such a special place: not just a university, but a family. 🫶

Thank you to everyone who made HEAL 2026 so meaningful. We can’t wait for 2027! 🇮🇹💙🙏

Happy International Nursing Day to all the incredible nurses in Italy, the US. and around the world 🇮🇹🇺🇸💙

International Nursing Day is celebrated every May 12 in honor of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who was born in Florence in 1820. Her connection to Italy makes today especially meaningful as we recognize the lasting impact nurses have on healthcare and communities worldwide.

This week, we are especially honored to welcome 20 Maymester nursing students and faculty to the HEAL program here in Italy. It is a privilege to have them with us as they learn, serve, and experience global healthcare firsthand.

Grazie a tutti gli infermieri e le infermiere per il vostro impegno quotidiano. 👏

Day one of our 4th Annual Physical Therapy World Summit was an incredible success. 💫

With guest presenters from Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence, UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, two of Kenya’s top physical therapists, and Duquesne’s own faculty, students had the opportunity to learn from leaders in the field of physical therapy and healthcare. 🌍

From engaging presentations and meaningful discussions to networking with fellow Italian PT students, today was filled with collaboration, innovation, and global perspectives in patient care.

An inspiring day of learning, connection, and professional growth — and we’re just getting started. 🌍💪🇮🇹
