π§ Emerging research into neuroplasticity is helping scientists and healthcare professionals better understand how changes involving brain structure and function may play a role in Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS).
Structural neuroplasticity refers to physical changes in neural pathways and sensory networks, while functional neuroplasticity involves changes in how brain regions communicate and process information. Researchers believe both may contribute to symptoms experienced in Visual Snow Syndrome. ποΈβ‘
One promising neuroplasticity-based treatment approach for VSS is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Recent studies found that MBCT modified for VSS was associated with measurable changes in functional brain connectivity on fMRI scans, including improvements in sensory filtering and reduced hyperactivity in visual networks.
Ongoing research continues to explore behavioral therapies, neuromodulation techniques, sensory rehabilitation strategies, and emerging pharmacological approaches aimed at improving quality of life for individuals living with VSS. π¬π‘
The Visual Snow Initiative remains committed to advancing research efforts and supporting the development of future treatment options.

π§ A newly published study, Learnings from Familial Visual Snow Syndrome: A Case Series, has provided some of the strongest evidence to date that Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) may have a genetic basis.
Researchers examined 31 individuals across four generations of the same family and identified multiple relatives with VSS or related visual symptoms. While some participants experienced visual snow since childhood, others developed symptoms later in life during periods of stress, pregnancy, migraine onset, or after starting certain medications.
The study also highlighted the wide range of symptoms associated with VSS, including photophobia, palinopsia, nyctalopia, migraine, tinnitus, and floaters. ππ
Although the findings do not definitively prove a genetic cause, researchers say the appearance of symptoms across multiple generations strongly supports the possibility of hereditary involvement. π§¬
Research into the genetic basis of Visual Snow Syndrome is ongoing, including continued efforts through the Visual Snow Initiative to better understand the condition and support future treatment development π¬
