SERVICE ABOVE SELF — MY TRUTH
These photos capture moments of packing, organizing, preparing — ordinary actions that, to many, might seem small or routine. But for me, they embody something much deeper: a testament to a calling I hold close to my heart.
Being a Lion has always meant Service Above Self. It’s about showing up, quietly and faithfully, where I am needed most. Yet, in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, I found myself confronting a different truth — one that challenged my understanding of service, worth, and my own capacity to make a difference.
Melissa’s destructive force left communities shattered, lives uprooted, and hope seemingly washed away. Watching her devastation, I was overwhelmed by a profound sense of inadequacy. I wanted to do more — to pour out my heart, my strength, my very soul into acts of service that could somehow fix the brokenness. But there was a time when I was utterly crippled — not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. I was unable to do anything at all. I couldn’t serve, work, or even simply live without pain and doubt consuming me. That period felt like being caught in a dark, unyielding silence, where movement and purpose seemed impossible.
In that silence of despair, I wrestled with a painful truth: I felt I was falling short. That perhaps my quiet service was insignificant compared to the enormity of need. That my hesitation, my inability to physically enter the devastation, meant I was failing at what I believed was my purpose. The feeling of inadequacy gnawed at me, making me wonder if I had done enough — if I was enough.
But then, in the midst of my reflection, Hurricane Melissa’s true lesson revealed itself. Her destructive force, while terrifying, also embodied resilience. She showed me that impact isn’t solely measured by volume or visibility — it’s also rooted in steadiness, faithfulness, and humility. Melissa’s unwavering strength in her chaos reminded me that even in destruction, there is a form of service: the kind that endures in silence, in patience, in unwavering commitment to give dignity and hope in any way we can.
Her example helped me see that my efforts, though quiet and unseen by many, are still vital. Packing supplies with intention, offering support from a distance, holding space for those who serve in ways I cannot — these are acts of service that ripple outward, even if they are not immediately visible. My role is not to bear every burden or to be everywhere at once, but to serve faithfully where I am, with sincerity and humility.
Melissa’s devastation and resilience became a mirror for my own journey. It challenged me to see that service isn’t about perfection or volume; it’s about faithfulness in the small moments, the quiet acts, the unseen sacrifices. It’s about trusting that even my hesitations, my doubts, and my limitations are part of the larger tapestry of service — woven with grace and purpose.
As Mother Teresa once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
This reminds me that even in my most vulnerable state, my small acts, infused with love, matter deeply.
That period of feeling crippled, unable to move forward, taught me the profound truth that sometimes, the greatest act of service is simply surviving — holding on to hope, faith, and the belief that healing is possible. It was a spiritual awakening to realize that even in my most vulnerable state, I was being shaped into someone stronger, more compassionate, and more aligned with my purpose.
As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
Through my struggles, I found that surrendering my need for perfection opened the door to authentic service and self-discovery.
This experience has deepened my understanding: that true service begins within — with self-compassion, humility, and the courage to show up, even when I feel inadequate. That being enough is not about doing more, but about doing what I can, with love and integrity.
This is my truth.
A Lion who serves quietly, with a heart full of humility.
An introvert who cares deeply, in ways words often cannot express.
A woman learning that in surrendering my need for perfection, I find the fullness of my purpose.
