SAPESI-Japan Mobile Library Project

岩手県大槌町で東日本大震災後の復興を支えた移動図書館車「なかよし共和国号」が、現在は南アフリカ共和国ハウテン州で活躍しています🚌
岩手県大槌町は、2011年の東日本大震災による津波で甚大な被害を受けました。その後、2012年2月、日本ユネスコ協会連盟より移動図書館車「なかよし共和国号」が寄贈され、住民の方々に本を届ける活動が始まりました。
2018年6月には大槌町立図書館が再建され、その後もしばらく運行が続けられましたが、次なる活躍の場として南アフリカへ渡ることになりました。
2022年、当会の南アフリカの教育支援プロジェクトの一環として、出港式を経て南アフリカへ寄贈されました。車両状態も良好だったことから、現在は南アフリカ・ハウテン州教育図書館を拠点に、主力車両として運用されています。
わたしたちは、南アフリカ出張の際に学校訪問し、移動図書館車が子どもたちへ本を届け、読み聞かせ授業を行っている様子を目の当たりにしました。震災復興を支えた車両が、日本の反対側で新たな学びを届けていることに深い感銘を受けました。

The "Nakayoshi Republic" mobile library, which supported reconstruction efforts in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture, following the Great East Japan Earthquake, is now serving the community in Gauteng Province, South Africa. 🚌
Otsuchi Town in Iwate Prefecture suffered extensive damage from the tsunami caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Subsequently, in February 2012, the Japan Federation of UNESCO Associations donated the mobile library vehicle "Nakayoshi Republic," and efforts to deliver books to residents began.
In June 2018, the Otsuchi Town Library was rebuilt, and the bus continued to operate for a while afterward, but it was eventually sent to South Africa to serve in a new capacity.
In 2022, as part of our association’s South Africa Education Support Project, it was donated to South Africa following a departure ceremony. Since the vehicle was in good condition, it is currently being operated as a main vehicle based at the Gauteng Provincial Education Library in South Africa.
During a business trip to South Africa, we visited schools and witnessed firsthand how the mobile library van delivers books to children and conducts storytime sessions. We were deeply moved to see that the vehicle, which had supported post-disaster reconstruction, is now delivering new learning opportunities on the other side of the globe.

【図書館・情報科学(LIS)会議への参加】
EDULIS（司書教育機関）にて開催された「Library and Information Science Conference」に参加しました📚
SAPESIのセッションでは、日本の戦後復興を支えた移動図書館車の歴史について紹介しました。
また、図書館車の運用に関する現地サーベイを踏まえ、運営上の課題について提起しました。
特に、車両のメンテナンス・修理体制に関しては現場の関心が高く、活発な議論が行われました。

Two SAPESI-Japan members visited South Africa✈️

[Participation in the Library and Information Science (LIS) Conference]
We participated in the "Library and Information Science Conference" held at EDULIS (the library and information science education institution)📚
During the SAPESI session, we presented on the history of mobile library vehicles that supported Japan’s post-war reconstruction.
We also raised operational challenges based on a local survey regarding the use of mobile library vehicles.
In particular, there was significant interest in vehicle maintenance and repair systems, leading to a lively discussion.
