WORLD DONKEY DAY 2026.
On a day dedicated to celebrate baby donkey, , yesterday was special. Caritas Kitui led by Madam Florence Ndeti, the Director, joined the world in marking World Donkey Day 2026 at Nguutani Market Shed in Mwingi West Sub County, Kitui County.
Themed,’ Preserving Africa’s Donkey is Our Collective Responsibility,’ it was a day meant to celebrate the donkey and the vital role it plays in rural and urban areas in improving livelihoods and the many achievements that have been made in protection and preservation of donkeys especially against the unending illegal slaughter and Donkey hide Trade(DHT).
The event started with a media briefing in Mwingi Town at Asher Hotel where speakers called on all stakeholders to work together in ensuring that donkeys are well taken care of and those who violate the animal’s rights are held accountable. Dr. Raphael Kinoti , Brooke E.A Regional Coordinator made it clear that there is no legal donkey slaughter in Kenya and those who slaughter donkeys do it illegally and Must be arrested and prosecuted.
An award ceremony was conducted during the media briefing session where outstanding individuals and offices were recognized for their relentless efforts in ensuring that the donkey welfare is not compromised in the last six months.
Taking place at the Nguutani Market shed, the event brought together, Caritas Kitui staff led by Madam Florence Ndeti, Brooke E.A team led by the Regional Director Dr. Raphael Kinoti, County Government of Kitui team led by the County Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Joseph Kamonzo,Mr. Robert Maitethia a representative of the Association of Donkey Owners in Kenya (ADOK), representation from the County Commissioners office and representatives of the National Government among others.
During the event, free medical screening and free veterinary clinics were launched , 8 donkeys rehomed and a tree planting exercise taken at the tail end of the celebrations.

Debates open up to new ideas and understanding. It was a pleasure having such an invaluable discussion on Preserving the African Donkey and promoting it's protection for future generations. Together , we can rise awareness on the vital role Donkeys play in our communities and livelihoods.
