Ministry of Health issues alarm of waterborne diseases outbreak
By Martin Murithi

The ministry of health is now warning of a rising diseases crisis in the country with growing unmanaged garbage and waste management, mostly in cities.

Speaking this morning during a public health stakeholders in Nairobi, PS Muthoni said more Kenyans are now at a risk of contracting diseases as she says data shows that Kenya produces about 22,000 tones of waste every day, yet only 10% of that is managed properly.

According to the PS, this poses a dual crisis and hampers efforts to maintain high health standards.

Consequently, the PS noted that there is also a serious threat that is posed by Kenyans who throw plastic bottles anyhow, which she says would in turn clog drainage and contribute to the kind of diseases Kenyans are exposed to.

This, coupled with the threat of open defecation in rural Kenya, contribute to high risks to public health management.

She now wants a government – private sector partnership to promote a campaign dubbed epuka uchafu being run by the ministry

The stakeholders event was held in conjunction with Hennet, a conglomerate of health NGOs in Kenya

Kindiki Rallies Meru Behind Government, Announces Multi-Billion Projects

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged Meru residents to support the Kenya Kwanza administration, outlining a series of development projects worth billions of shillings across the region.

Speaking in Meru Town, Kindiki said the government has allocated Sh3.5 billion for road construction and Sh1 billion for the modernization of Gakoromone Market, alongside expanded student accommodation projects in local institutions including Meru National Polytechnic, KEMU, and KMTC.

The Deputy President took a swipe at opposition leaders and former government officials visiting the region, challenging them to account for their development record while in office.

He questioned what leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had delivered for Meru during their tenure. Kindiki insisted that leadership should be judged based on tangible development, urging residents to reject divisive politics and instead focus on progress.

Kindiki further declared that the current administration under President William Ruto should be supported through to 2032, adding that he would seek the presidency thereafter.

He assured residents that his leadership ambitions would prioritize the development of Meru County and the wider region.

Area leaders echoed his sentiments, highlighting ongoing and completed projects. Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia noted that Sh55 million had been invested in rural electrification in Molo Village, adding that Meru continues to benefit from national government projects such as the expansion of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital and the Gakoromone Market upgrade.

He also expressed support for the Affordable Housing Programme, saying it has created employment opportunities for local youth.

Other leaders called for unity and sustained backing of the government, cautioning against leaders who visit the region with criticism but offer no development agenda.

Deputy Governor Linda Kiome She appealed for support for local sports teams, including the Black Panther Queens and their male counterparts, who recently secured Sh2 million in prize money from Betika football challenge.

The teams are seeking an additional Sh3.5 million to acquire a bus to ease transport challenges as they compete in Division Two and the Conference Cup.

North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood reaffirmed the region’s commitment to development, stating that Meru leaders are united in supporting the President’s agenda.
