Envaco Kenya
Unwrapping the status of waste management in Kenya
11/11/2025
At Envaco, we're changing how Kenya manages waste by: โ
Providing green bags for easy waste sorting โ
Converting organic waste into animal feeds โ
Supporting the welfare of landfill workers โ
Creating employment opportunities in our communities
Every bag sorted is a step toward a cleaner, healthier Kenya.

๐ฟโป๏ธ Envaco goes global!
We had the privilege of visiting Manishiyat Nasser in Egyptโa community famously known for its innovative approach to waste. What others see as garbage, they transform into valuable resources that power livelihoods and protect the planet.
Our exchange was more than just a visit; it was a learning journey on how determination and creativity can turn challenges into opportunities. This inspires us at Envaco to keep pushing for sustainable solutions right here at home in Kenya ๐ฐ๐ช, because waste isnโt the endโitโs the beginning of something new. ๐ก๐

ENVACO is a non-profit organization committed to revolutionizing waste management, with a primary focus on improving the management of organic waste while conducting research and publishing on the management of organic waste. Our mission is to align waste management with the principles of the circular economy by promoting reduction, reuse, and recycling.
Recently, ENVACO had the opportunity to engage with the Rainforest Alliance, a global nonprofit driving sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and community empowerment. Our visit shed light on impressive initiatives, especially across six counties in the Mt. Kenya region (Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Laikipia).
Key focus areas include:
โ
Certification for sustainable landscapes and farming
โ
Farmer training in ecosystem restoration
โ
Livelihood diversification (e.g., beekeeping, biogas)
โ
Support for SMEs, youth, and school-based sustainability
โ
Promotion of green financing and equitable value chains
However, we sought to understand the challenges they have faced working on recycling organic waste, and here were some of the issues:
1. Market barriers: Despite partnerships with several institutions, scaling sustainable products remains difficult due to limited buyer interest.
2. Scaling issues โ Micro-producers must reach industrial scale to turn a profit. The worry that vast volumes of waste are needed to produce a significant amount of proteins
3. Quality control โ Natural-based enterprises struggle to maintain consistency, making them less competitive than traditional alternatives.
As we push for inclusive and circular economies, we must ask:
1. How do we ensure small sustainable ventures grow into viable businesses?
2. Can we improve market access and financing pathways for green innovators?
Letโs learn from Rainforest Alliance and work together to bridge the gap between innovation and impact.
