Chaos Erupts as Tear Gas Disrupts Church Service; Congregants Flee
Nairobi — A peaceful Sunday morning service dissolved into scenes of panic and respiratory distress today after multiple tear gas canisters were deployed inside a local church in Nairobi sending elderly congregants and young children scrambling for safety.
The incident occurred mid-service, according to witnesses, filling the sanctuary with thick, acrid smoke within seconds.
As the gas spread, the solemn atmosphere was replaced by screams. Elderly members of the congregation, some with limited mobility, were seen being assisted toward side exits by fellow worshippers.
The impact on the youngest attendees was particularly visible. Dozens of children were separated from their parents in the initial rush, appearing visibly traumatized and confused as they were led into the church courtyard coughing and clutching their eyes.
"We were in the middle of prayer when the first canister landed," said one congregant. "Suddenly, you couldn't breathe. Everyone was running, and the children were screaming for their mothers. It was pure terror."
'Unidentified Source'
The origin of the canisters remains shrouded in mystery. While tear gas is standard equipment for riot police, it is currently unclear who deployed the chemical irritants or what prompted the escalation.
No active protests or disturbances were reported in the immediate vicinity of the church prior to the incident. Fatalities remain unknown. #
