Kenya is proudly represented at the 67th International Mathematics Olympiad [IMO], to be held in Shanghai, Peopleโ€™s Republic of China from 12th to 22nd July 2026. By Team Kenya consisting of five exceptionally gifted students selected purely on merit: Gilbert Ongoro, Shawn Kimutai, Alvin Komu, Jed Oloo, and Mulwa Baraka.

The team is accompanied by:
Team Leader: Dr. James Katende โ€“ University of Nairobi
Deputy Team Leader: Mr. Martin Mungai โ€“ CEMASTEA

Selection & Preparation

The students emerged from a rigorous national process organised by KMO, a joint outfit by CEMASTEA, UoN and the University of Waterloo formed to advance a strong math culture in our schools, that attracted over 16,000 learners across the country. Selection was conducted through three rounds of competitive testing. This partnership underscores Kenyaโ€™s commitment to nurturing talent and strengthening STEM education.

In further preparation for the global contest, the team benefited from the African Olympiad Academy [AOA] Rising Star Program based in Rwanda. Under the leadership of Dr. Arun Shanmuganathan, an IMO finalist in 2011, the Academy provided air tickets and specialized contest preparation for the students. This support reflects the growing spirit of African collaboration in advancing mathematics excellence.

Performance and Outlook
Team Kenya enters the IMO with great momentum, having recently won a Gold Medal at the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad [PAMO] in Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire last month.

According to Deputy Team Leader Mr. Martin Mungai, the team is confident and ready: โ€œOur students have prepared thoroughly. We are optimistic that they will fly the Kenyan flag high at this prestigious global competition that has brought together 120 countries.โ€ The Peopleโ€™s Republic of China is hosting this yearโ€™s 67th Olympiad.

China has invested heavily in the advancement of the mathematics discipline, which has seen it produce the top team globally for the last 15 years. This is a clear testament to the role of mathematics in driving innovation, problem-solving, and national development.

CEMASTEA is hosting the 9th Biennial African School of Fundamental Physics and Applications (ASP 2026), which brings together Physics educators, students, researchers and leading scientists from across the globe from July 6th to 18th, 2026.

CEMASTEAโ€™s recent research highlights the critical role of Physics education in shaping innovation and problem-solving across energy, health, climate change, communication technologies and industry. Findings emphasize that learners are more motivated when exposed to hands-on STEM outreach initiatives, teacher empowerment and confidence directly influence student enthusiasm for Physics and collaboration between academia, industry and communities strengthens pathways for learners to pursue STEM careers.

The conference has brought together undergraduate and postgraduate Physics students from across Africa and beyond, over 50 lecturers, researchers and scientists from leading global institutions and Physics teachers.

During the opening ceremony, Mrs. Gladys Masai, Ag. CEO of CEMASTEA warmly welcomed participants, emphasising that their diversity and expertise form a truly international and unique learning community. She highlighted the pivotal role of Physics in tackling global challenges and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Beyond the conference, a STEM Outreach Initiative will extend to selected secondary schools, exposing learners to exciting Physics experiences. This initiative is expected to spark curiosity, boost motivation and encourage more young people to pursue STEM pathways.

The programme celebrates the commitment of stakeholders in advancing Physics education and scientific excellence. Participants will engage in lectures, discussions, networking and exploration of emerging developments in science and technology.
