Statement on Development Challenges in Northern Kenya

As residents of northern Kenya, we continue to face significant challenges in development compared to other parts of the country. For example, the distance from Garissa to Mandera is less than 700 kilometres, yet it can take over 24 hours to travel due to poor road infrastructure.

In addition, our region still suffers from limited access to electricity, unreliable communication networks, and underdeveloped public services. Despite these hardships, residents and businesses in northern Kenya pay the same and sometimes even higher taxes and revenue contributions as those in more developed counties.

We therefore call upon the national and county governments, as well as development partners, to prioritize infrastructure investment, improve connectivity, and ensure equitable distribution of resources. The people of northern Kenya deserve the same opportunities for growth and development as every other Kenyan.
