Why should a map be interactive?
Apart from being in the 21st century, maps should be interactive because you have little to no knowledge as to who is going to be using your map. They might be your local cartography professor or a layman who doesn't know the first thing about maps beside the meaning of the word. Interactivity enables your map to be easier to understand and use. Sometimes it performs a lot of the user's tasks for them. Other times we make them deliberately sophisticated so as to create an out of this world experience for the user. That said, check out this really cool map of middle-earth that preceded the launch of the 2013 Hobbit movie. It really brings to life the meaning of map interactivity, guiding you alongside Frodo and his adventures in J.R.Tolkein's The Hobbit. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did here at Edge Spatial: http://middle-earth.thehobbit.com/map (you should probably check this out on your computer for the best experience)
