Karakol is a great base camp for day tours or multi-day tours in the mountains nearby. The trekking and horseback riding possibilities are limitless and it’s still possible to find places that are untouched by large tour groups. My advice is to spend at least one full day in Karakol to just walk around and enjoy something different than Bishkek, Osh, and Kochkor. I first travelled to Kyrgyzstan in 2022 and was enchanted by its landscapes and the kindness of its people.

Kyrgyzstan has been on top of my travel bucket list for quite some time, and in September 2022 it was finally time to go! I’ve been looking forward so long, ever since I opened up my Lonely Planet table book, covering a spread on all countries in the world. Kyrgyzstan was the main country to stand out for me. I can say, it was exactly as I imagined it. There is a whole lot of nothing, but everything is so insanely beautiful. The wide and open landscapes, the wild horses galloping around, the beautiful mountain lakes and the mountains.
