Design Concept – “The Urban Float Pavilion”

Concept Statement:
Rooted in the philosophy of lightness and connection, the Urban Float Pavilion reimagines public space in Phnom Penh by drawing inspiration from traditional floating villages and modern ecological design. This structure gently “floats” above ground using elevated platforms and water-like reflective elements, creating a serene escape in the middle of the city.

Design Goals:

Encourage community gathering and dialogue

Provide tranquil zones for meditation and self-reflection

Foster education and cultural appreciation through rotating exhibits

Attract local and international visitors via a unique architectural identity

✨ Key Design Features:
🌱 Vertical Garden Spine: Runs through the center like a green lung, cooling the space naturally and symbolizing growth.

🖼️ Floating Gallery Modules: Modular units hover over a shallow water feature, connected by bridges and light walkways.

🧘 Meditation Decks: Quiet platforms shaded by trees or pergolas, with views over planted courtyards or still water.

🪵 Materiality: Bamboo and reclaimed wood combined with translucent panels to reflect Khmer textures and lightness.

🌀 Fluid Circulation: Visitors flow organically through layers of experience — from active community zones to reflective niches.

Design Concept – “Srok Srae Café & Co-Work”
Concept Statement:
Inspired by traditional Khmer architecture and the natural rhythms of light and shadow, Srok Srae (meaning village field) is a modern urban oasis combining a coffee shop and co-working space. The design merges timeless vernacular elements — such as raised platforms, slatted wood panels, and water features — with contemporary spatial flow and open layouts.

Key Design Features:

🏡 Inner Courtyard: The heart of the space, shaded by trees and surrounded by seating, it serves as a communal breathing zone and natural light well.

💧 Water Feature: A shallow reflective pool cools the courtyard microclimate and reflects natural light into the surrounding spaces.

🌞 Light & Shadow Play: Slatted bamboo façades and overhanging roofs create moving patterns of shade throughout the day — a nod to the poetic rhythm of Khmer temples.

🪵 Material Palette: Natural materials like bamboo, local wood, and stone evoke a strong cultural identity while staying minimal.

👥 Dual Zones: One side opens into a vibrant café with direct street access; the other becomes a quieter co-working area with courtyard views and semi-private booths.
