김춘환[b.1968-]은 1995년 프랑스로 이주 후 30년 이상 일상에서 새로운 시선으로 작업을 이어오는 작가이다. 그는 서울대학교 서양화과 학사를 마친 뒤 프랑스 파리 8대학 조형예술학과 석사를 졸업해 서울과 파리를 오가며 활발히 작업 세계를 확장하고 있다.

작가는 작품에 사용되는 종이들의 물성을 관찰하고 분류하는 과정들이 필연적으로 수반된다. 새로운 시각으로 본 종이는 자르고 반복적으로 구겨지고 압축한 후 절삭을 통해 캔버스 위에서 심층적인 단면을 드러낸다. 수집한 인쇄물들은 작품으로 각색되었을 때 어떠한 이미지로 변모할지 예측 불가능하기 때문에 우연한 과정도 작품에 스며든다. 작품 속에 온전한 작가의 의도만이 들어간 것이 아닌 종이 덩어리의 조화와 상호 간섭으로 조율된 화면을 보여준다.

Kim Chunhwan (b. 1968) relocated to France in 1995 and has since dedicated over thirty years to developing an artistic practice that explores new ways of seeing everyday life. He holds a B.F.A. in Western Painting from Seoul National University and an M.F.A. in Plastic Arts from Université Paris 8. Dividing his time between Seoul and Paris, he continues to broaden his creative vision.

The artist’s process begins with a close observation and classification of each paper’s physical qualities before it enters the artwork. Once engaged, the paper is cut, crumpled, compressed, and sliced, revealing on the canvas a layered depth of cross-sections. Since the transformation of a collected printed surface cannot be foreseen, chance encounters become integral to the practice. Each composition emerges not solely from the artist’s intention, but from a surface shaped through the interplay and mutual interference of the paper mass.
