How does writing work?

Written language is an amazing way for humans to communicate information. Communication through written messages has been around for centuries. Today, written communication is accomplished by typing on a keyboard or by writing on paper using a ballpoint pen, marker pen, or pencil.

The invariable components of the process of realization of written speech are: intention, visual and auditory control and automated movements of the hand.

Written speech is a voluntary act that begins with a motive. A person always knows what he or she writes for: to remember information, to pass it on to another person, to accurately and correctly write down oral speech material that he or she is listening to.

The motive is to dictate words, sentences or text.

Here perception of speech sounds becomes important - writing down words or text at dictation is not possible without involving internal auditory analysis.

When a person writes dictation, there is bound to be external or internal articulation, either explicit or implicit. This helps to clarify the sounds that need to be written down.

The final stage of dictation is the transcription of sounds into graphic images, the translation of the sound structure of a word into a sequence of graphic symbols. It is essential to be able to reproduce the image of a letter and accurately orient the graphemes in space in relation to each other.

Some types of writing are realized without hearing, such as copying or personal signing.

The motive is to formulate and state a thought - an essay, an outline, a short message

A person mentally draws up a plan of a written statement, imagines the general sequence of ideas.

A person relates the initial idea to a specific sentence structure and selects the necessary words to accurately convey the main idea of the message.

After that, the final stage of translating the idea into written speech begins - the automated movements that the hand makes when writing words, under the control of vision.

During the writing process, a person regulates the sequence of writing: what he or she has already written and what is to be written.

In a literate adult, writing is an automated skill and each word is a complete motor act. All complex operations are abbreviated, convoluted.

The writing process is not regulated by a separate part of the cerebral cortex. Written speech is the result of the joint work of several brain areas, each with its own function:

Temporal lobe of the cerebral cortex - sound analysis of the message;

Occipital area - visual control of writing letters and words;

parietal area - precise hand movements;

Frontal lobes - conception of a written statement and understanding of written words.
