Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves can’t efficiently go through the outer ear to the eardrum and the small bones of the middle ear. It can often be corrected surgically or medically. Sensorineural hearing loss, however, is caused by damage to the hair cells in the inner ear. It’s permanent, but HHF researchers are working toward better treatments and biological cures.
