In 1988, World AIDS Day became the first international global health day. It is recognized annually on December 1, and global efforts to prevent new HIV infections, increase HIV awareness and knowledge are promoted. In observance of the day, this year’s theme is "Equalize”. WHO is calling on global leaders and citizens to boldly recognize and address the inequalities which are holding back progress in ending AIDS; and equalize access to essential HIV services particularly for children and key populations and their partners
