The Phoenicians were skilled shipbuilders and navigators. Their trade routes went from one end of the Mediterranean Sea to the other, reaching as far as Spain and the British Isles. They traded wood, linen, dyes, and wine. They also carved wood and ivory and worked with metals and glass.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT

These covers are more than just about fashion. They are about the creators, designers, artists, models, singers; the women and men who colored, shaped, and defined our eras throughout history.

My research of the 50-70s era include valuable 60s magazines, books, plays, movies, songs... last but not least some amazing instagram accounts preserving the history of Lebanon... I loved to travel to those days through the images!

Big credit to a must follow account!
I thought I did a lot of digging but I learned so much from Joe Challita's account, starting with this picture that ignited this project!

Baalbeck International Festival

Founded in 1956, the Baalbeck Festival, set in the Roman ruins of Baalbeck, was Lebanon’s first international festival.
From classical to ballet through to jazz, the festival introduced spectacular shows to its program, making it one of the most prestigious in the Middle East. The platform also helped some of Lebanon’s most talented artists to emerge such as the Rahbani Brothers, Fairouz, Wadih El Safi, Roméo Lahoud, Sabah, and later on the Caracalla Dance Theater.

It started back in the twenties, when a small group of Lebanese and French romantics picked the ruins of the Acropolis to meet and recite their poetry, establishing the modern use of Baalbeck for public gatherings. Other events were held there in the forties, leading to the ultimate establishment of the international festival that took shape in 1955 with the first official season in the summer of 1956.
