A resume is a formal two to three page document which is primarily developed to help a job seeker secure a job interview. Resumes come in a variety of formats and are traditionally supported by a (customized) cover letter. Hiring managers and recruiters use resumes to categorize potential interviewees. As such, a smart job seeker distinguishes his or her resume by tailoring (or rewriting) it to match the requirements of each job vacancy.

A well-developed resume, at a minimal:
- Contains your contact information, resume introduction, experience, skills, and education;
- Is concise;
- Uses appropriate language; and
- Is very well formatted.

Note however that, some individuals may require a resume with four to nine headings to paint a proper picture of their abilities and demeanour.
