Kumana National Park: An ornithologist’s paradise
Situated 391 kilometers southeast of Colombo on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast, Kumana National Park is celebrated as one of the country's premier birdsanctuaries. This remarkable haven for avifauna is not only a must-visit for bird enthusiasts but also a crucial nesting and breeding ground for a vast array of bird species.

A Sanctuary for Birds
Established in 1938, Kumana National Park has earned its reputation as one of Sri Lanka's most significant bird habitats. Out of the 400 bird species found in the country, 255 species have been recorded within this park. The park’s extensive birdlife is supported by a massive 200-hectare natural mangrove swamp known as the "Kumana Villu," alongside numerous tanks and lagoons scattered across the park. These wetlands provide ideal conditions for nesting and breeding, attracting thousands of birds, particularly during the migration period from April to July.

Kumana National Park, with its rich biodiversity and crucial role as a bird sanctuary, stands as a vital conservation area in Sri Lanka. Its vast wetlands, dense forests, and diverse wildlife make it an essential destination for nature lovers, especially those with a passion for ornithology. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or simply a lover of nature, Kumana offers a unique glimpse into the vibrant and diverse ecosystems of Sri Lanka.
