The Chairman of Sri Lanka's Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, has announced that the second preferences of voters will be counted for the two leading candidates in the 2024 presidential election – Anura Kumara Dissanayake (NPP) and Sajith Premadasa (SJB). All other candidates will be disqualified, as no one secured over 50% of votes in the first round. Currently, Dissanayake (NPP) stands at the lead with a 42.31% of the counted ballots and Premadasa (SJB) at second with 32.76% votes.

He explained that, under Sri Lanka's election rules, second-preference votes will now decide the winner. This marks the country’s first-ever presidential run-off. The announcement was made during a special media briefing.
