The four life stages of ground beetles are the egg, larva, pupa, and adult. It can take these beetles up to a year to mature, and once they do, they can live for up to two years. The development time varies depending on location and species. Adult females lay eggs in soil, and the emergent larvae dwell in organic litter or in topsoil.

Before becoming adults, larvae go through four stages of development. Mature larvae create a cell in the soil during their final instar.
