வாத்து போன்ற பிற நீர்ப்பறவைகளைப் போலன்றி, இவற்றின் இறக்கைகள் முழுமையாக நீர்ப்புகாதவை அல்ல. இதனால் நீரில் மூழ்கி மீன் பிடிக்கும்போது உடல் எடை அதிகரித்து, ஆழமாகச் செல்ல உதவுகிறது. வேட்டைக்கு பின் இறக்கைகளை விரித்து வெயிலில் உலர்த்தும்.
இவை நீருக்கடியில் 45 மீட்டர் ஆழம் வரை சென்று மீன் பிடிக்கும் வல்லமை கொண்டவை. இவற்றின் கால்கள் துடுப்புப் போல அகலமாக இருப்பதால் வேகமாக நீந்த முடிகிறது. இவை சில நேரங்களில் கூட்டமாகச் சேர்ந்து மீன்களை ஒரு பகுதிக்கு விரட்டிச் சென்று வேட்டையாடும் (Social Fishing). நீர்நிலைகளுக்கு அருகில் உள்ள மரங்களில் குச்சிகளைக் கொண்டு தட்டையான கூடுகளைக் கட்டும். பெரும்பாலும் கொக்குகள் மற்றும் நாரைகளுடன் இணைந்து ஒரே மரத்தில் பல கூடுகளை அமைக்கும்.

In Sri Lanka, the Little Cormorant (Microcarbo niger) is widely known in Tamil as நீர்க்காகம் (Neerkagam), which literally translates to "water crow". It is the most common and smallest member of the cormorant family found across the island's wetlands, lakes, and coastal lagoons. A small, duck-like waterbird, roughly 50 cm in length. It has glistening all-black plumage during the breeding season, which becomes more brownish in non-breeding periods or in juveniles. They are expert divers that hunt fish underwater. After fishing, they are famously seen perched on rocks or branches with their wings outstretched to dry because their feathers are not fully waterproof. Commonly found in village tanks, rivers, and marshes throughout the lowlands, including the North Central and Northern provinces like Jaffna and Mannar.
