TURMERIC
Curcumin the warm vibrant yellow spice that we just cannot live without!

Belonging to the ginger family turmeric is native to Southeast Asia and is grown mainly for its culinary and medicinal uses.
The South Asian 'curry' that has revolutionized the worlds palette is here to stay. Turmeric is the spice that draws out the flavour and adds to the vibrant rich colour of the 'curry' popularly known as the 'kiri hodda' in Sri Lanka.

Turmeric is known to possess antibacterial properties and has been used as a home remedy to treat minor wounds and cuts, and in Ayurveda to treat inflammatory conditions, skin diseases, and digestive ailments. Another popular ayurvedic drink is the 'thambum hodda' or broth prepared using turmeric, coriander, ginger garlic, pepper, cumin and many other spices and drunk to ward off the sniffles.

Culturally turmeric plays a major role in the Sri Lankan culture as we revere the natural germ killing properties of turmeric and use it to wash meat and fish before cooking. It is widlely used to disinfect floors and kitchen counters as we believe cleanliness is next to godliness.

Turmeric is also used in beauty routines and two very popular beauty secrets is the use of turmeric mixed with coconut oil to whiten teeth and turmeric mixed with bees honey and milk as a quick face pack.

Finally all I can say is its many versatile uses has kept turmeric close to our hearts and a part of our homes.
