📍 Wewurukannala Buddharaja Maha Viharaya

Located near Dikwella, this important Buddhist temple is best known for its massive seated Buddha statue, one of the tallest in Sri Lanka. The temple was developed in the early 20th century under the guidance of Ven. Sri Sumangala Thero as a centre for worship, learning, and spiritual reflection.

A distinctive feature of Wewurukannala is the tunnel pathway leading to the main shrine, where detailed murals and sculptures illustrate Buddhist teachings, moral lessons, and the cycle of life. These visual narratives are intended to guide devotees toward mindfulness and understanding before reaching the Buddha image.

Today, the temple remains a place of active devotion for local communities and a powerful cultural landmark, representing the enduring influence of Buddhism in southern Sri Lanka.
