Gender-based violence (GBV) is a life-threatening health, and human rights issue that can have a devastating impact on women and children, as well as families and communities. victims of GBV are unable to make their own choices, voice fears, share their opinions, and protect themselves & their children due to fear of further abuse. “Most of the time their human rights (right to live, freedom of expression) are denied and their lives are stolen away from them by the ever-present threat of violence” (UNICEF, 2000).

WHO reveals that worldwide, almost one third (30%) of women who have been in a relationship have experienced some form of physical and/or sexual violence by their intimate partner in their lifetime. Globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by a male intimate partners.
Women’s welbeing Survey SL 2019 - It covers each of the five forms of violence perpetrated by intimate partners that were measured: physical, sexual, emotional, and economic violence, as well as controlling behaviours. Two in every five women (39.8%) have experienced one or more of the five forms of violence by a partner in their lifetime. Almost one in five (18.0%) have experienced one or more types in the last 12 months.

Sexual violence
An act,attempt or threat that is sexual in nature and carried without the consent of the victim. E.g- r**e, marital r**e, forced marriage, forced prostitution among others etc
Physical violence Trafficking,slavery,slapping,beating,punching,burning,use of weapons etc
Emotional/psychological violence
Verbal abuse that is insulting and degrading to the victim.
Domestic violence & Intimate partner violence
Any physical,sexual psychological, verbal and economic violence within a family or in an intimate relatinship, whether ot not they live in the same household.
Socio-economic violence
Excludes a person from participating in society. Denial of access to health services, education, work & denial of his/her civil,social,economic,culturaland political rights.
