Breaking the Deadlocks of History
The Royal–Thomian Battle of the Blues has witnessed long periods of dominance and droughts before decisive victories reshaped the rivalry. Eardley Lieversz led Royal College Colombo to victory in 1969, ending an 18-year wait without a win since 1952. Nearly two decades later, Anura Bulankulame guided S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia to a memorable triumph in 1988 after a 24-year drought.
The encounter has also seen remarkable phases in its results, including an 11-match stretch without a draw from 1888 to 1899, and a period dominated by draws between 1970 and 1982, before Chulaka Amerasinghe led Royal to a commanding 10-wicket victory in 1983 to end the sequence.
